How It Works

The story unfolds as a set of Journeys, combining narrative, imagery, and interactive maps:

  • Every Journey includes a Summary and a sequential set of Passages, with each Passage tied to a specific location.
  • Some Passages unlock Supporting Passages that provide deeper, site-specific insight.
  • Follow the curated progression and / or roam freely on the map.

What You Will Explore

  • Journeys 1–4 trace in sequence the political and military decisions behind the walls' construction, from early motivations to their role in the Peloponnesian War.
  • Journeys 5–7 identify and described the archaeological remains still visible in Athens, Piraeus and Phaleron today.
  • Journey 8 presents a 26 step timeline of key events that shaped the rise and fall of the Athenian Empire in the 5th century BCE.
